These are the web sites I used to plan this ride. Favorite search engines, general tourist information sites, Australian mapping sites, and Australian cycling sites. Many more sites were used for researching Australia, including city and state sites, and most notably http://users.chariot.net.au/~gloria/index.html, but everything is linked to the sites below.

Cycling Sites

Bicycle Fish - Adelaide

This quirky site by Grace Newhaven is the best I found for bicycle touring in Australia – not just Adelaide or South Australia. Just scroll down this index page for everything you might want, gathered in one place. Go here first.

BikeOz

Site sponsored by Australian wholesale and retail bike associations. Click “Where to Ride” and “Information Desk” for links to more useful sites. Limited dealer list too.

Bicycle New South Wales

Australia's largest cycling organisation - a non-profit, member-supported community group. This Sydney centric site has, or has links to everything you need to know about riding in NSW. See an article submitted by Bob on “Bike Touring in Australia”.

Adventure Cycling Association

Where adventure hits the road and bicycle touring is king. If bike routes crossing America and bike tours are of interest to you, then you've come to the right place.

Bernie Jones Cycles

There were other good bike shops I talked to, but these are the folks in Adelaide that put together my bike gear. They were very helpful and competent – even ordering and having my chosen bike shipped over from the USA.

back to topSearch Engines

Google and Vivisimo are the two search engines I used. Typing in the name of a town followed by the state abbreviation in quotes (e.g. “Melbourne, VIC”) returns coherent information. Use these to ‘dig into’ any particular community.

General Tourist Information (Australia)

Fairfield Walkabout Travel Guide

The Fairfield Walkabout Travel Guide has history, things to see, accommodations and eating establishments for 1,500 Australian cities in alphabetical order, plus other travel resources. My first choice for checking out the many towns I am riding through.

Rough Guides - Australasia

More towns than Lonely Planet and better information than Walkabout. Go to the above link, click on Australia and use the menus to access state and city/town information.

The Lonely Planet

Go to search, type in the name of a larger city and get good info.

Mapping Sites (Australian)

Geoscience Australia - National Mapping Division

Stock, customizable maps and paper maps. These guys are overachievers. Unfortunately you get too much or too little detail.

WhereIs

A Mapquest of Australia, with directions. Missing a lot of smaller Australian towns.

The Wind Across Australia

Wind maps. Really important for a 3,800 mile ride!
